3/10/10-UPDATE: King has done so well on his meds, and has been stable for some time. However, his need to chew on things got him in trouble. We cannot leave blankets or beds in his kennel, as he will chew them up. He has been fine to give a blanket to at night, for bedtime......but no more. King must have decided that the sheet he was laying on looked pretty good, and he ingested quite a few large pieces of it. King had surgery a couple of days ago, to remove the pieces of sheet from his abdomen, and there was a little that had started to get wrapped up in his bowel. It was pretty major, and the Vet took pictures of what he removed, as he was amazed at how much King had eaten. King is doing okay - it will be slow go for awhile. He can only have small amounts of food or water at a time, and he can only have canned food - softened with water. Because the Vet had to go into the bowel, there is a section of it that is narrow.....so we have to be very careful that King cannot swallow anything else that will harm him. Some things - like a piece of a toy - that will go through a normal dog, will get King in trouble. We would so love for this boy to find a home - or get into a foster home. He is such a sweet boy, loves to walk, loves to be brushed and he enjoys sunning himself in the good weather. King will need a safe place and one where he cannot get into anything that may harm him. The cost of his surgery was almost $1500. If you can send a donation to help offset the cost of the surgery, we would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for your support.

Kingman is a handsome 7 year old male who needs a special home.  King came through the rescue last year, and was adopted by some wonderful folks who loved him and worked with him.  Due to the economy, they had some family members come to live with them and there was now a toddler in the home. Kingman is a dominant male, who had been an outside dog all his life - with no one to tell him what is acceptable and what is not.  Kingman can get pretty fixated on "things" and any time the toddler had something in her hand, King had to have it. He doesn't realize his size, and he would knock the child over in his excitement.  The situation was just not working, so King came back to us.  Just before he came back, he had a seizure.....a pretty significant one.  He had two more seizures within the first 2 weeks he was back here, so we put him on medication. As many of you know, it is very difficult to pin down the reason why a dog is having seizures.  The Vet suspects epilepsy, but they cannot be sure.  Kingman seems to be stabilized on the dosage of the meds he is taking, and we would love to see him in a home. Kingman is a funny dog......he is not the typical Golden that is always wanting your attention - he has more of an independent soul....more than likely from being on his own for so  long. A couple of things Kingman really enjoys......he LOVES  to be  on a perch.....a table, bench, just anything he can jump up on and he is a chewer. We have had some volunteers spend time with the dogs lately, brushing them and they get a  kick out of Kingman.  He will jump  up on a table we have for the dogs, chew on a tough bone of toy while he is being brushed.....and he is totally content. Kingman also loves to go for walks. He is strong on lead, but if you work with him, he does pretty well. He is okay with other dogs, and if in a home with another dog would probably do better with a female. King is housetrained and we were told he has good house manners.  He does very well with routine, so if you establish a good routine for King - as well as some Galileo Bones, or tough Nylabones - he will be happy.  Kingman does need a home with no cats, however.  He is a quiet boy, who just needs a safe, stable home he  can call his own.  He can be quite the class clown at times and will make you laugh.  If you are interested in possibly fostering a dog, perhaps this could be your boy.
