It has been extremely slow these past several months, as far as dogs coming in, so we offered to help foster a couple of young English Setters for SWESR.

One of them, Izzy, went to her new home over the weekend, but we still have Garbo....

Unlike her namesake, Garbo would never say “I want to be alone.” Garbo is a one year old girl who loves running and playing with her doggy friends and then snuggling up to her humans. She is a petite girl, about 40lbs...just the right cuddle size!

Garbo is mostly English Setter and has a fair amount of the prey drive English Setters are known for. She may be OK with cats, but would need supervision and slow acclimation in a home with cats to make sure. We feel Garbo may be mixed with Border Collie, as she has some of the Border traits.

Garbo needs all the things that an active young dog needs – lots of people time and training, plenty of exercise and stimulation, and either an active dog in the home or a person that is mostly home and who will make sure that she is socialized regularly with other dogs. She also needs a securely fenced yard with a 6’ fence to keep her safe. She is not a dog to be left outside on her own for long periods of time. She prefers the security of a home or kennel.

If Garbo has one fault, it is loving her food too much to share. Although she never resource-guards toys, she does guard her food. Food guarding is not uncommon in rescued dogs and is an issue that can be worked with, and sometimes eliminated.

We’ve not had Garbo in a home with children and she is very active so she is only a candidate for homes with children 7+ years of age. Garbo is crate-trained and appears to be house trained. She has a bit of basic obedience training, but is a willing student who needs to learn more. She is very smart, and learns quickly. She is very agile, and would be a good agility dog. She is fully vetted and ready for a foster-to-adopt or adoptive home. For more about adopting from SWESR, see http://www.swesr.org/Apply-to-Adopt.html
